SimCity 4 Tips, tricks, and useful cheats

SimCity 4 info, tips, cheats, ect.

I have been playing SimCity 4 for a long time and I have found a few tips and tricks to aid you in building your town to 100,000 Sims. This is the step to step procedure:

  1. Select a medium sized layout with a little bit of water a mainly flat land. Now

when you first get to the name of the city and how hard screen select hard and name your city. Hard makes the game easier in the case that the city population is more balanced.

  1. Ok in the center of the map zone a fairly large area of Residential. Then add a either an avenue around or a simple street. Then add a few avenues in the residential zone.
  2. Place a large industrial center close to the water but leave some space for the business for the water were later you will add marinas.
  3. Build a small business area. Now attach the areas together with avenues.
  4. Build a power plant and a garbage dump that is 4 * 2.
  5. Connect the power to all the grids.
  6. wait and watch as the city builds
  7. once you have enough money build a sea port near the industrial center or a rail system so that there are fewer trucks on the roads on the roads.
  8. Now wait until you have enough inflow of cash and you get the large elementary school if you have the deluxe edition, if you don't build 2 small elementary schools in the residential area. Check to make sure you aren't wasting money by adjusting the funding to the school.
  9. Now wait for about 3 years
  10. now build and upgrade roads and industrial areas, if needed add more commercial area too.
  11. now space pipes about 7 to 9 apart from each other and zone the whole city for water even unused areas
  12. now go to the residential and rezone it in medium sized homes
  13. now build a water pumps until demand is met
  14. If you need to build or increase power, garbage, water, sea ports, rail ways, ect. Do so now
  15. Once the residential is mainly small apartments add a few monuments like the Hollywood sign or something else near or in the business area. Redo all streets to roads. If you want now would be the time to add more avenues and so forth, later you will find problems
  16. now select the central area of your residential and zone for large after you have put in a High School and a college, if needed add more industrial zones and commercial zones
  17. Now wait for the large towers to appear
  18. this is your time to put in reward that you have gotten like: the mayor house, city hall, parks, ect.
  19. Keep watch on the industrial areas, build a few fire department, make sure that they are large fire departments
  20. look at your budget and make sure you are still making money
  21. click on the cheetah speed button and go in to the 20's.
  22. once you have gotten to the 20's add have a good budget build a few police stations
  23. rezone the rest of the residential to high and rezone or build new zones for industrial and commercial as needed for the next few years, old zones should be zoned for high and new zones should be zoned for low, add more seaports or railways as needed
  24. now rezone all commercial to high when you have enough money
  25. select your speed setting as desired
  26. watch it go up to 100,000 population
  27. build anything else you like but keep the budget in mind
  28. add the university and other education and hospitals when you have the money
  29. once you want more high tec. industry go to the tax menu and change it to 3 %
  30. now you should have a city of 100,000
  31. good job!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheats: To get into the cheat menu press Ctrl + X

  • 1. weaknesspays
  • 2. You Don't Deserve It

These too cheats will aid you if needed

1 gives you 1000 Simoleons

2 Gives you All Rewards

Tips:

  1. don't build hospitals until you have a large population other wise it is a waste of money
  2. Build large police stations and fire stations because they do save money in the end
  3. build parks to lower the co2 emitions
  4. build a water treatment plant to decrease water pollution
  5. build power plants that suit your current needs like coal when you don't have a lot of money and others when you have the money
  6. the far best power plant I have found out are the natural gas plants and wind mills

Hey, great Hub! SimCity 4 can be so addicting. I never had success with the railroads at all. What do you do when residential areas downgrade due to high traffic noise?

munroenet profile image

munroenet Hub Author 4 years ago

i usually try to add stuff like parks, schools, and other things that boost the rating of the area.

Kat07 profile image

Kat07 4 years ago

I've done that - and added trees like crazy - still have trouble with the traffic noise, especially if it's a busy street. I even bought the book but it mentions nothing about how to solve this problem.

Jen31 4 years ago

You should use the cheat to get rid of power requirement and water requirement, it reduces a lot of pollution and if you want even more high tech you should build more schools, libraries, museums, etc because educated sims want high tech jobs

Richard 4 years ago

You shouldn't use cheats unless you can do it and still feel like a winner.

Still, about the only thing you can do about your traffic/noise issue is reorganize your zones. Currently, I start in a corner of a city with avenues connecting to both neighbors spaced 5 blocks from the edge/corner. From the corner of these avenues, I layout a grid of one-way roads in my residential zones, with 8 blocks, then a one-way, then 3 blocks, then the opposite one-way, then another 8 blocks, and so on until an avenue for the commercial zones. In the 8 block areas I zone residential, and in the 3 block wide areas I provide transportation, schools, fire, police, schools, hospitals, parks, churches, libraries, museums, and even a few commercial zones to reduce commute times. In industrial areas, you can zone commercial in the 3-block areas, or just plant trees in half of them to help keep air pollution in check, and your development high-tech.

The result has been very high density development with very low traffic and commute times between 20 and 30 minutes. Mayor rating is over 90%. Land value is high everywhere that's zoned, population about 90,000 and growing, with less than half the large city's area used, the rest is covered with trees.

well a couple days ago i got sim city 4 and it sucks balls that you cant get like a 100,000 dollear cheat cause its hard to get money

erik 4 years ago

there is a kind of park witch give you much money each month. you should download it. it makes the game a lot easier

BZ 4 years ago

I love this game, even though it crashes to the desktop a lot. My main problem is roads. My sims complain about the street so I upgrade to a road, then they complain about the roads. The avenues suck, the game never lets me place them where i want. Are one way streets any good? I find myself adding a second parallel road when traffic is bad. I love seeing high wealth homes being built ;) it's such a rewarding feeling.

Simplwork 3 years ago

I've found organizing your city in a grid system which utilizes a rudimentary traffic flow helps. I.E. Laying Avenues around the outside of the city and in a giant plus sign through the city. Around the plus is a grid of Commercial zones, inside the blocks created by the Avenue is residential zones. In commercial areas place heavy rewards I.E. Colleges etc. when money allows. (making enough to support) Place hospitals, schools, and police in the residential zones. (everyone wants to sleep where it's safe, but the police should cover Commercial zones too) Outside the giant box created by the avenues(roads can initially be placed until funds allow) place industrial/agricultural zones and update the density as the game continues. Eventually you'll need more jobs, place commercial zones over what was industrial starting at connecting roads/avenues and expand as needed. This should get you a good city. Remember: Once city will not grow large until all cities around it are filled and demand is modified by what is connected.

OMG cheats? whats that? either you guys suck or im just a badass. yes, i do search for sim city tips to place certain things on my map. learn to play without cheats. you'll enjoy the game

Duck 3 years ago

If your city has heavy traffic you should put subway and allow all city ordinance

Cameron Munroe 3 years ago

The Problem with doing that is there are only a few ordinances that you need to do for lowering traffic the rest will just be a waste of money

Luke 3 years ago

I do all that and it still does not work! It's like my PC is allergic to high-tech!

Pioli12 3 years ago

I have 100000 pop and growing! If you want to lower traffic build subways and bus stops. Also, high tech will come if you lower $$$ taxes and zones high-density away from your dirty and manufacturing industrial companies.

Noob 3 years ago

I read about these one way streets, and yet I have no clue as to how to make them. Help please? I might add that I have the original Sim City 4 with no expansions (updated version though)... Do they even exist in the original? Goddamn traffic jams are messing up my cities :P

munroenet profile image

If you go to the road section in Simcity 4 there will or won't be a selection for one way streets. The only problem is that they are hard to utilize and build.

you people suck at sim city 4 i am awsome at it though i gotten over 110,000 people when i wsn't even done with half of the city oh and WaRIOrD IF U raise youre taxes higher then people will leave ure city the most amount of money i ever got was 6 million dollars without cheating

arshia 3 years ago

PLEASE READ THIS I KNOW IT IS LONG BUT ITS THE MOST HELPFUL INFORMATION YOU EVER GOT!!! always build a city center and dont buy things thats montly cost is high unless your income is way higher than your expence. always start out with small things not big things for example:elemantary schools, clinics instead of hospitals and etc. then when u get lots of income and ure income is more than ure expence, then you can place hospitals and highscools and all that stuff. o and i forgot to mention always place parks and plazas esspesialy plase plasaz near commercial zones also always put stuff that attract tourists and business around commercial zones. if u get the tourist trap then place it by commercial zones. if u have more than 25,000 jobs in a medium city and also have a stock exchange, then you might see gigantic , huge, tall scy srapers being built.I PROMISSE THAT WAS THE MOST HELPFUL INFORMATION YOU EVER GOT!!!!

READ THIS IF YOU WANT A SUCSESSFUL CITY

Its ok to cheat a little bit if you need to cheat. From building 4 sim citys over 100,000 people and 1 of them has 155,000 people, I have a little exprence with this game. To make a SUCSESSFUL city you put lots of commercial and residential zones and little industrial zones. Lower taxes for the high comercial and residential taxes to around 0%. Wait till most of the commercial and residential zones fills up. Then raise the taxes to no more than 9% or until you get out of the hole. The residents love parks and stuff you get when you do some of the cheats. If you want a big city to grow even bigger repeat the tips I gave you

James 3 years ago

Here is what I found out that REALLY helps develop high tech:

(This assumes that you have rush hour expansion or deluxe edition)

1. Cover your industrial regions with TONS of police kiosks or police stations.

2. Also add TONS of parks.

3. Make sure your residential areas are highly educated (every sim with an available elementary school, high school, library, museum, and college; university is a + too).

4. Decrease high tech tax rate to 0 (if you can afford it) and increase manufacturing and dirty to 20.

5. Begin manually destroying dirty and manufacturing industries.

High tech really helps develop your city-- I have a city with 410,000 people and one with 230,000 people. My total region's pop. is 1,493,000 people. (that took me a long time)

I do need help with transportation!!!

How can you, if possible, stop the "no job" zots??

How should I build in order to decrease commute time?

These are the things that make building cities difficult-I need help.

I can get ppl easy, it is making zones 3X3 that I'm trying to do. My only question is this: if I make a zone and it is 1X3 does it stay that way, or will the game automatically build a skyscraper by combining 3 (1X3)'s or do I have to manually make sure it is a 3X3 or sometimes I get a 4X3 -- those are awesome....anyway, that's my question

Coal Power plants are great for small area or industrial citys in sim city 4 because they are cheap and easy to build. The main factor for population in your city is mainly taxes. Lower your taxes and more people will come.

ARSHIA KIANI 3 years ago

dude, wat r u talkin about. i aggree on the taxes but having a coal powerplant?!!? no way!!!!!!! i know its cheep but that spreads deseases. eaven the enviremental advisor AND the utillity advisor told me to remove it. and that thing spreads pollution like crazy! y would i bother putting a coal power plant if its dirty, has a lot of pollution, and makes people sick. thats mostly the reason that i used to suck at simcity 4. but since i began using other power plants and other technuiqs, almost ALL of my cities had over 500,000 or 600,000 people. Avenues can be annoying to implement, but only if you try to implement them AFTER you've already built your city. Chances are you'll have built it pretty compact and therefore cannot build an avenue that helps you at all.Think about Avenues BEFORE or AS you build your city, think about where people will have to get to and from. As your traffic builds on roads, implement subway systems and bus stops regularly. With subways, link a lot of different lines so that people have a lot of available options to get to and from different locations. Also think about your industrial areas. Don't use VERY polluting power stations, try to lower that as much as possible. Think about parks and trees and don't tightly compact industry TOO much. Leave spaces for further development of trees and parks - also make sure you keep an eye on water treatment. It's a useful expense.

Qinetix 3 years ago

The coal power plant is good to be placed in industrial areas were the industrial are is far from the city and conected with comercial zones, still i can manage only get around 30.000 people on easy mode and i think i should lowever the taxes if it brings you more people it would bring more money tho every time i lost more money than i get any help? (btw i need help were to place those parks in the middle of every square sourundered road?)

munroenet profile image

munroenet Hub Author 3 years ago

One simple thing about taxes is lower them in the beginning and then if you are in trouble raise them a little. Your city doesn't need everything in the beginning. Have you done the tutorials in the game? if you have or haven't i suggest going through them again. They are a great resource.

Fr0ble_n0ob 3 years ago

for all of you people the best way to make a city over 1.5 million is to make for city not on a grid system (i have made lots of mistakes doing that because they only support a few hundred thousand people). You make 'mini communities' consiting of 2 Commerical 4 x4 blocks with lots of space around them and 5 or so 4X4 residential with parks of all sorts. then add transportaion systems of rail, bus and subway. Then make Schools and a hospital. Make each community spaced out so that you can put decent sized parks in beetween (add's as eye candy later on). Set your taxes up a the start not to encourage growth but to set you on track (and sims dont complain) and very slowly put them down 0.1% per 10,000.

Good Luck!! If anyone needs Further Help Send me an email petesweet1@hotmail.com and i will help further and show you my creation.

i only cheat because i dont want to wait for a month to get the money needed, weaknesspays and the power and water cheats. with taxes just lower the high wealth of all types to 7, mid to 8, leave lower at 9. if u do this low is always high, then with civics the mid and higher will follow. u can get away with leaving the commercial services high end at 8 n still have high demand. when u start ur city pick a corner next to a plot with water access, for an example, go to new york region, pick the big lot in the middle, there should be to the east a small plot but with alot of water, use the small water plot for dirty industry only(just set taxe rates for everything else other than dirty at 20, leave dirty at 9 trust me). build a seaport and connect the plot with rr's to your main big plot thats where u put ur high tech industry along with commercial and residential. for no reason whatsoever do u ever put dirty with anything else. stay on the corner next to the dirty and build, plan ahead use alot of avenues and highways, dont build more than u need but where u r building trust me. as your city grows and the dirty goes back to peaking ur city should now reach that entire corner, now its time for another dirty area, use the small plot south of ur main and southwest of ur first dirty, connect with highways and avenues and trains, now if u planned correctly rezone if havent to the highest densities, build only large or big civic buildings, u can always adjust the funding take the hit early on trust me, make sure u have at least two to three hospitals in each community, my communities are about 60x60 total, it takes usually three to four sometimes hospitals after r rezone to high density, dont build the small airport, build the biggest one available, it will attract large corporations for commerce as ur residential becomes bigger the commerce will follow then high tech demand will skyrocket, provide everything as early as u can, education and health take time. only build fire departments when a fire breaks out then destroy after the fire, u dont need them even the instructions tell u that, just be quick when a fire breaks n ull be alright. if u follow this, i do this all the time, i build just one corner of the big plot and i had over 200,000 with 70% of land still available. build farms on the other side of ur big plot, as ur city grows demand for farms will b nonexistent, once this happens and u start filling up u can destroy the farms and rezone. for the record i dont play games as much as i used to but, i went 130+ years on my region, all of my r's were on the big plot, i still had one side left to build maybe 15% or so land left, i had almost a million people in my city, if i wouldve finished i wouldve probably had 1.5 million once i rezoned everything high and gave it time to build up, it takes time. if people dont have certain jobs thats ok, use the surronding plots around ur main to build dirty and low tech jobs but keep it close and use highways n mass transit, leave ur big plot for all the nice big buildings, u can thank me later, goodluck!

For the fire problem:

If you have a fire station check the effective radius of that fire station. If it isn't covering you industrial section/ where the fires are starting add another fire station to that area. Also if you don't have any fire station that would be the problem. Finally you can put legislation in place under the tax section/ ordinace/ fire alarm program.

I will check to see if I can figure out the adviser problem.

actually here's order of best plants:

*Hydrogen plant (50K power, clean)

*Solar plant (10K power, clean)

*Wind plant (clean, but low capacity just 50)

*Natural Gas (3K power, but moderate pollution)

Hesperus 2 years ago

Just build a dummy city next to your main city. Build your pollution plants there, and just run a power hook-up to the border and connect them. You can buy the power on your main city and not worry about the pollution.

if you have demand problems and you got a small city you have to build some small elementry schools then a high school and then build a city city unversity... sorry for my bad english

Jenny 2 years ago

I just started my game, and I have about 18,000-ish people. I look at the people with 100K+ and wonder how the heck they do it... but anyways, what I usually do is put a large residential area near the edge (or in the center, it doesn't truly matter). Then, I zone commercial areas around the edges and in the center of the residential area. I sometimes add a bit of maufacturing and dirty industry a little bit away from the main area. This doesn't cause too much pollution, as long as you keep an eye on the enviroment, and add a lot of parks and trees. I also add a few medical clinics and an elementary and an optional high school. If I am using the easy setting, I will also add a fire station and police department at the beginning.

I'm open to tips!

And thanks to everyone else for the great advice!

SiMod 2 years ago

go to simtropolis and look for tree mods there.

Ors 2 years ago

Managing the budget is the easiest thing, as long as you build the larger buildings instead of the smaller (in the long run that is): for example, large police station, large elementary school, hospital, etc. I easily reach beyond 10 million (although I use the cheetah speed... haha, oops).

Also, the hospitals aren't that expensive - they are much more effective than clinics, having higher capacities and wider radius (unless you're building a small town).

Now, I've reached populations of 75,000 sims... how did you guys get 100,000 + sims in your city?!

As for the commercial demand, I can't keep it high enough to sustain wealthy commercial services and offices! Any advice?

Che Moshesh 2 years ago

My biggest city has 503 000 and i found that, with my other regions as well, by building lots of industry-only towns - and connecting roads (VERY important), big cities just...flourish! PS: Go to Simtrpolis.com and download the Super Cash Plaza...you'll never need to use weaknesspays again!

i got a cheat that allows you to get $999,999,999 and more. so there are cheats out there that do work, you just have to know how and where to look. ;)

Landon 23 months ago

I used to cheat a lot, but I realized I enjoy it much more when I don't. What I do now is I build an avenue across like 5 cities in a region and then I build a rail parallel to it. Then I build a train station for passengers and another for freight trains, but just one in each city. I surround this with a small commercial zone and surround the entire commercial zone with residential. I always use the natual gas power plant at first, cuz it's the best, at least before getting the solar one. I also create a large agricultural zone around the edges of the city. This creates a city much easier to manage. It has a "downtown" district, which is the commercial zone, surrounded by residence, and then by agriculture, with a single central train station in the downtown district. It is easier later to build a mass transit system, such as a subway, cuz u have to build it sort of like a giant star, with stations next to parking lots in the residential zones, and stations in the downtown district (more here than in the residential zone. This way people drive their cars to the nearest station, park, and take the subway into the downtown, reducing commute dramatically.

Landon 23 months ago

Oh, and I think the clue to simcity 4 is mass transit in each city, and inter-city mass transit as well. Neighbour cities are the key to prosperity, specially if the city's neighbours are prosperous.

notanexpert 22 months ago

Deny your sims all but the most basic civics in the beginning. You really don't need secundary schools until later on. You most definitely don't need a mayor's house etc. and not building such buildings (until you can easily afford them) will save you over $1k per month. You don't want ambulance coverage or school bus coverage beyond your residential areas, and 5000 sims don't need 100 doctors. Fiddling with budgets saves you A LOT of money. NEVER cut budgets of police or fire stations. You can, as stated in another post, not build fire stations until a fire breaks out, and tear it down when the fire is put out, but you'll find that'll be very time consuming, expensive in a bigger city (without the preventing effect of the fire stations, fires will break out all the time) and most important, annoying. Power plants are expensive, so keep demand between 80% and 90% all the time. No less, your energy will be more expensive than need be, and no more, as your adviser will become very annoying. Keeping budgets as tight as that, and money will flow into your city like it were the Pentagon (no offense ;)).

@ Mikamocha Yeshua Elyon: My guess is your pollution is high, and traffic is jammed. To combat pollution, put in more parks, replace power plants for less polluting ones if you need to (you can probably easily afford it) and try to get rid of any remaining dirty industry. To combat both problems, rezone. Cut down travel times by cutting distance. Make sure commercial areas are near to residential. Same goes for high tech industry. Evict production and polluting industries to other lots, away from your city.

The problem could also be that demand has been saturated, no matter what you do. In this case, build cities in neighbouring lots. Each city stimulates demand in all neighbouring cities. Pause your city, and spend a little time on developing the region.

I hope that helps.

Here's an extra tip for those who want cash first to develop their cities. When you start:

buy a coal power plant, roads, Industrial on the edge, Residential in center, and fire stations for Industry. DO NOT separate Residential and Industry, don't bother with anything else until you fill the map, don't buy things because your advisors say so.

First, your map will fill with low density anyway. Your budget should start gaining with thousands before you put extras down. Keep it that way and watch your budget on purchases. Then build water pipes, roads, rails, your infrastructure. Then add city services like police, fire, garbage, hospitals, education. After all that, you decorate with parks, gifts, and monuments because that draws more people. This is when I also cut pollution, and help the environment. To get rid of Dirty Industry, just dezone and rezone, taxes wont get them to leave, just cut growth

i got around 80 thousand in my bigest city and at total of 200000 in my metro area im wondering i have 6 citys all conected somecitys suck to ballance out my good ones but a total of two nice residential and commercial cities im wondering i have a lot of sky scrapers in my commercial city but i feel theres much larger ones like ones as tall as the empire state building and mine are only half that size but do i have to develop my metro area huge to obtain those sky scrapers or do i need more than 80000 in my biggest city

timozz 21 months ago

my prob is that i cant make big buildings. i find that i make my cities out of landmarks. i how do you make big buildings out of comercial or apartments. it doesnt work even in my biggest city.

Boisy17 21 months ago

If you hold the ALT key and zone 4x4 blocks you will get the massive buildings that hold 10,000+ sims. The office buildings will be enormous compared to what you have seen... I've been playing for years and just figured this out... I've always wondered why my buildings would only get to a certain size..

Boisy17 21 months ago

...and you will 70,000+ sims in little more that a half an hour... enjoy. Pretty soon your entire map gets so full, the buildings just go up and up and is awesome to watch...

No brainer guide to developing thriving city.

1.)Set up coal plant

2.)Surround with grid system of roads as such:

Main Road - skip 3 spaces - street - skip 3 spaces road

Fill with industrial medium

3.)build ONE small fire station

4.)one water tower

5.) build long road to separate polluted area to residential

6.) use same grid system, 1 -road skip three spaces, 1 street - skip 3 spaces (try to make each block 3x5-3x7)

7.)go to cheetah speed and watch it grow.

Don't build any services until cashflow allows it.

I am working on a sim city for future citys project(national engineering competition for 6th 7th or 8th graders. And i have to build a reliable sim city with at least 50,000 and very low pollution, and high health+education especially, everything else also has to be good. Please help I really need some good tips i bought the book but it barley helped

Has anyone ever managed to build a Spaceport? Your city needs 2 things; (1) 25,000 high-tech jobs and (2) an Advanced Research Center to be offered a Spaceport and i have built many cities that should qualify, but never have i been offered it.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Can anyone give me some advice to fix it?

Trent 16 months ago

A way i get a lot of money in the start, is first start the city, but before you build anything, put the cheat code "riskymoney" in. (Ctrl - X brings up the bar.) Although it creates earthquakes, This code adds 10000 to your money count. You can bring up the bar and press the up arrow and click enter instead of retyping the code over and over again. I usually get my city up to two million before I actually start zoning and such.

First things first... DON'T USE CHEATS! IT MAKES THE GAME NO FUN

I've been playing sc4 for about 4 months now and the only issue that i had trouble with is commute times and traffic congestion. Here's what i did:

1. Zone like crazy, dont worry about avenues or freeways or public transit at the beginning

2. When city is quite big, add hospitals and schools and stuff.

3. Pause the game, and check traffic congestion levels.

4. Almost always there's a red line, connecting several streets, usually from residence to work. May also be other reds, but find the longest one.

5. If traffic volume on that red line is very high, replace the whole length of the red with a freeway (elevated better than ground), adding exits as needed. Don't matter if few apartments get demolished, new buildings will take their place.

6. Do this until you have a good length of freeway

7. Check traffic congestion again. May find some congestion at the exits and on a few streets.

8. Upgrade congested streets to roads or one ways, depending on traffic volume.

9. Check congestion levels again. Now add subways & bus stops to ease congestion. A parking garage or two, nearby subways would be of great effect.

10. If there's water, ferry's are better than bridges.

11. Connections to neighbours are best done with highways and monorail. Add a subway near monorail station for people to get there.

12. Add parks in those zoned blocks which are inaccessible, i.e. have a car with a cross on top of them.

RESULT: City with very few congestion levels in red, maximum income from public transit, high mayor rating and low pollution.

I use this rather than going for the road/avenue grid during early game as i prefer random over symmetrically built cities.

what helps ur city ath the beginning is lower tax rate to 2-3 % and slowly increase tax rate to about 7 %. i have over 250000 people and i havent been playing for too long

Ill answer a few questions here: (Note: this is for people who don't want to cheat)

1. Money/ Population issues:

I can get well over 10 mil bucks and 100,000 pop in like 7mins time using this method.

Start by building a oil powerplant. Don't use coal its bad on money and poplution.

Now you want place some industrial around the power plant. From the street plan create a long range of avenues and roads spanning the rest of the map. Fill in 30% with medium industrial 60% Res. and 10% commercial. Keeping the commercial in between the res and industrial.

Fill the whole map up before you build anything else. (Except 1 small fire station)

Then move to water pumps.

Your income shoul be nearly triple what your expenses are. :)

2. Subway:

Subways if done right stations should be placed next to parking garages (which should only be by res) and by commercial and industrial.

3. Road congestion:

Place 2 avenues right next to each other helps with congestion/ traffic times. Highways take up too much room.

Build Toll Houses, those things are cash cows and reduce traffic noise in residential areas. Im my 500k city toll houses have always provided been the surplus cash I need to expand. Now my budget is 140k in and 120k expenses. Toll houses provide 15k cash in that budget, mass transit like subway provide 10k. Without those things I'd have a mess of traffic and a deficit. So go and milk those commuters!

Razor 12 months ago

The only reason I use the get everything cheat is just because my city grows to fast for the crappy power plants (gas, wind, coal, etc) that I have no choice, I need that nuke or Im gonna have a huge mess on my hands

samuel burridge was hereee 12 months ago

ok poeple so now that i have made my biggest city of around 1,000,000 people there is only one problem...the traffic... and it is very high and i dont know how to reduce it!!!!!!!

CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO REDUCE TRAFFIC NOISE?!

ian 11 months ago

put parking garage to reduce heavy traffic traffic or rebuild your road, build two parallel one-way road.

CheatHunter 9 months ago

It is kind of strange that few years ago that I came across a cheat that allows you to open up a hidden toolbar that gives you a list of every single building in the game and even to point that you can click on the list and place that building onto the city without having to wait for your buildings to build. Otherwords...instant building. But it seems that no one talks about that cheat at all.

LynustheSped 9 months ago

What in the hell is wrong with all of you???? Do you have mental problems??? I have the orignal so SC4 and my city's have 300,000 people in them and counting.... The secret is - only place high density areas. Thats it. Start of by creating your network of roads and then put your stuff in between that. Have all roads lead to the other side of the map and put a big bunch of coal power plants and like 500k worth of HIGH density industry. High den. com. at the city centre and high residential leading away from the CBD. Only high. Never ever low or medium. With thr edu and cops and fire stations all mingled in between.... Traffic gets screwed but your money is just.... You know, you never run out... Now i have a question... One of my cities has 200k people but all of my hospitals and schools have nearly no teachers or doctors?!?!? The funding is maxed out on both, and still nothing??? Please help???

Do you mean that your schools have no capacity too? I have the original and haven't had that happen. I assume you checked the overall funding as well as for individual schools. Have too admit I use the You don't deserve it cheat, mainly because with 2 disease research centers I can support 440K population and get a few more private schools

If you use the original you cannot support the traffic with just streets, you need the subway and maybe even rail and highways. For very heavy traffic a tunnel may be your answer

kallum2 7 months ago

I followed your tips which are great btw and have covered the entire reigon and have a population of 3740000000

Mayors A Playa 6 months ago

Hello potential big city mayors, I'm a relative noob to sim city 4 deluxe edition.

The seasoned hands out their are not parting with some valuable tips, so I going to upset a few people here; but hey this thing is addictive so we should all help each other out, not just boast about huge population's.

This will be a long post but I think some people have really missed out on a lot of money earners here, no cheats required, so read on if you want my basic recipe for a GREAT CITY & REGION.

First you must build multiple interlinked cities, a mix of dirty cities, and pristine high tech, commercial, very wealthy showpieces. (you can bulldoze and redevelop the dirty ones later, once your pristine ones can support themselves easily.)

NEVER EVER USE COAL POWER PLANTS, NOT EVEN IN YOUR DIRTY INDUSTRIAL CITIES, YOU MAKE YOUR SIMS SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Use gas but preferably wind, 15 wind turbines equals a gas plants output 3000mwh/$400/month for gas verses $750/ 3000/mwh in wind. It costs a lot more, however is worth it to keep pollution down, also spread these city wide to even out the load on your power grid, this can be hard to do with big powerful plants. I use roughly 15 turbines per 5000-7000 head of pop. Don't ever build Nuclear power.

A good water supply is essential to keep a lid on all pollution, miss one upgrade and your environment slider plummets. To start place one water treatment works near a corner of an industrial area (heavy) use a pipeline grid of 6x6, be careful as you can easily make multiple connections which cost you money every month with no gain if you don't start this properly.

Tip use a sheet of graphpaper to crudely layout your proposed city!

Make connections to other cities but don't get carried away just one per pipeline to start off with! initially only connect pipes under developed areas but never under main avenues, to hard to place water pumps, make sure these face a roadway so they can be maintained, they do wearout so they need to be replaced every now and then.

MAYOR your SINGLE MOST POWERFUL TOOL AT YOUR DISPOSAL IS THE QUERY CURSOR. CLICK ON THE TOP ? MARK IN THE TOOLBAR AND USE IT TO CLICK ON BUILDINGS ETC. It will open a menu which will tell you several important things about the site. The most important thing on this menu is the make historical box. Check this and watch similar types of developments appear if the same zoning is nearby . Initially frequently pause the game at least every month and check the historical box for every development in your city, except low wealth residential, do a few but only high density ones don't bother with low wealth houses under ten residents.

Strive to only develop high density, yet sprinkle a few low commercial and residentials in as well, experiment with different lot sizes to force high level development, 6x6 (3x3 back to back most important)residentials can under the right circumstances become occupied by one $$$estate, jump on this and make it historical and watch the wealthy come running if you've got your balance of development right.

Unless your on a mission to build a city in as short as time as possible, keep them very, very compact initially, to keep service costs down, don't forget to put taxes down to about 2.2 percent for all residential and try in the range 0.0 to 1.1 for everything else, mix them up don't have them all rock bottom vary it depending on demand, and don't be afraid to be ruthless with the bulldozer and rezoning, experiment a little here; the citizens love constant re-development!

Mayor if you keep your city very small for the first fifty years or so, it will encourage constant re-development. Over the years it will develop it into a mega wealthy, self supporting small city with a healthy bank balance and bright future.

Build plenty of avenues so the driving missions are easier to complete due to multiple lanes and lower traffic volume.

You must build a small airport first, if you have a couple of ag zones this airport will provide you with 5 flying missions aprox. every 12 months. Plus taxi missions which are most important as well. You should save it at least once a year one month after the aircraft missions so they will reset. Their are 3 aircraft, watch your altitude and look for a green ring on the ground under the plane this must pass over the highlighted squares either spraying or sky writing to enable you to complete the missions. The cropduster provides two missions spread zombie dust better money at $20,000 but takes away mayor rating. Try to keep your Mayor approval up( it's a good laugh but not recomended as you'll have zombies loose in your graveyard.)

Better off dusting the crops as you get a farmers market and $10,000 and a positive mayor rating. Wherever the circle is when the mission is completed a sparkly highlight will appear, sometimes with green money signs in it, it will increase the value and desirability of the immediate area, however fail the mission and the red $ signs appear and the zone goes backwards or stagnates for a short period.

Same applies to driving missions.

The skywiting plane can unlock the big stadium or if you take the evil Dr Vu's mission you will recieve $70,000.

Build a dump place a road into it most important and wait for uncle Vinnie to offer missions in the garbage trucks + 110 points or $70,000 for the evil version -points.

Mayor rating =110 can be regained by infiltrating the evil Dr's Lair with paratroopers, these take a long time to float to the ground so make use of the time to get the circle over an area you wish to encourage growth in.

Place large hospitals and surround with a mix of developments which will grow quickly, so will the areas around schools. Don't put sporting facilities right against schools leave a buffer to fill with residential which will rise quickly after you get little bink binks to school.

I have heaps more and will come back tomorrow to post some more tips, hope these help you.

I'm going back to play Mayor in my little pet project at the moment, tell you more if it works out!

May you build the cities of your dreams fellow mayors!

I'm trying to build avenues from the beginning but my line is red and it says unsuitable. The land looks flat, although it has trees. What am I doing wrong?

newplayer 6 months ago

cherski, why not you try to flatten the land first, like build some road or street on the land, then destroy it and replace it with avenue, some times i also having this problem and this is what i usually do
